Misconceptions of Feminism

Yup, it's true!
And it's also one of the very common misconceptions of feminism.
As a dedication to the first post of this blog, let's take a look at a few more:

1. Feminism is strictly about women's rights
Actually, no, it isn't. Feminism is about equality. Feminism fights for that equality by understanding that both men and women experience inequality. I won't deny that much of the focus is on women's rights, however, but that's only because women do have more of a lack of rights than men. But it is not fair for one to state or believe that feminism disregards men, because that would defeat the purpose of the word "equality".

2. Feminism = Man Hating
This point ties back to the previous one. Feminism DOES NOT advocate misandry! Again, that completely contradicts the idea of equality. This misconception is a very popular one because what feminism DOES advocate is the fight against the patriarchy; a system that supports the belief that men are dominant, and women are submissive. One who is against this system surely does not hate men.

3. Men cannot be feminists
Men, and members of any other gender for that matter, are certainly not restricted to the "feminist" label. Anyone can be a feminist! It's simple: if you believe that men and women should have equal rights, then you my friend are a feminist.

4. Feminism is no longer needed because women already have so many rights
There are people out there in the world that really believe women and men are equal because women have the right to vote...ouch. Feminism is needed now more than ever. Rape, unequal pay, domestic violence, education rights...the list of issues goes on and on, unfortunately. Thankfully, feminism promotes awareness and fights to solve these issues.

These are just a few of the many misconceptions that revolve around feminism.
We'll revisit and add on to this list as I continue to post and publish away!
